How to Reinstall Microsoft Edge Browser

Reinstall Microsoft Edge Browser in Windows 10

– Windows 10 is an awesome operating system, however, there are still some issues which creep up, now and then. One of them is, the problems users face with Microsoft’s new Edge Browser.

  • Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 not working
  • The MicrosoftEdge Browser may not open, or Microsoft Edge Browser will not open at all when clicked.edge browser icon
  • It is missing from the start menu
  • It is not listed under the Windows Apps
  • You cannot find it anywhere within Windows 10

Sometimes, the web pages may open in Edge Browser when you search the web from Cortana. But there is no way to launch the Edge Browser manually. You try in another user account and it is working absolutely fine. Or It may not be working at all in another user account. A Windows 10 Update or a system restore for another issue could’ve caused it to disappear.

What causes Microsoft edge not opening issues?

How to fix Microsoft edge?

What do you do?

You may find it under C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge.exe, But it cannot be launched from that location.

Frustration sets in!

No Problem! Whatever the Cause or reason for this buggy situation,  you don’t have to reinstall Windows 10. You don’t have to create another user account.

We have a Fix. A Simple Fix! An excellent fix for Microsoft edge not responding problems.

Copy and Paste the below command in PowerShell Admin Mode and Hit enter.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose}

Read on for more in-depth steps, if the above command does not fix the problem.

Reinstall Microsoft Edge Browser to its Default

Reinstalling the Edge Browser is pretty easy if you follow the below steps. Just a reminder,  you may lose all favorites. If you have favorites saved elsewhere or in other browsers, you can easily import it back to the Edge Browser. It is good practice to create a system restore point before starting any troubleshooting. It will help to get back to where you started, just in case you mess up. To create a restore point, Type create a restore point in Windows search and hit enter. Click the Create… Tab and follow the instructions.

Step 1

Hidden items have to be enabled – (Click on the “View” Tab in File Explorer and put a check mark on “Hidden items”)

Step 2

Navigate to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe and Delete the “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” Folder

(Where “%username%” is the name of your user account)

Deleting this folder may take some time. It takes about a minute or two to start initializing the deletion. It will delete all the files in that folder except 2 or 3 files and the parent folder. The screenshot of powershell-run-as-administrator“Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” may not get deleted. It will ask for administrator privileges at the end, even though you are the administrator of the account. It doesn’t matter. Hit “Ok” and then select “skip”  to skip the remaining file deletion. Hit “Ok” once again.

Updated – 18 January 2016:

In some cases, if a few files inside the “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” folder is corrupted, it may prevent the re-installation of the Edge browser. It may prevent Folder Over-write / deletion and we may not know that it is file corruption that is preventing the Folder Over-write / deletion. It is better to rename the “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” to “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD” to prevent such issues.

Updated – 15 August 2016:

Keep in mind, when it comes to deleting or renaming files, Microsoft Edge behaves differently in Microsoft account vs a local account.

If you are on a local user account the Microsoft Edge folder can be renamed or deleted easily after closing the browser or restarting the computer. In a Microsoft user account, just by restarting the computer or closing the Edge browser will not allow renaming of the folder.

The Microsoft Edge folder can be renamed if the “RoamingState” subfolder is first deleted.
(C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\RoamingState)

The Microsoft Edge folder can be deleted if the “RoamingState & “AC” subfolders are first deleted. (Restart the computer first to be able to delete the AC folder)
(C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC)

You can also sign in to another user account and then easily delete or rename the respective Microsoft Edge folder. But it is time-consuming.

You can skip Step 2 and proceed straight to Step 3 to rename the “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder.
Come back and read the above notes if you get stuck deleting /renaming the folder.

Step 3

Updated – 18 January 2016:

Restart the Computer.

(The computer has to be restarted, to make sure no folders or files related to edge browser are open – if not we cannot rename it.)

Launch Command Prompt in Admin mode

(To Launch Command Prompt in Admin Mode: Right-Click The Start Menu > Select Command Prompt (Admin))

Copy and paste the below command to first delete the “RoamingState” folder.
(“thf” is the username in this example – Substitute it with your account name)

RD /S /Q “C:\Users\thf\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\RoamingState

Hit Enter

Then, Copy and paste the below command:

REN "C:\Users\thf\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe" "Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD"

Hit Enter

Once again, Copy and paste the below command:

REN "C:\Users\thf\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe" "Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD"

Hit Enter

(“thf” is the username in this example – Substitute it with your account name)

We run this command twice or until you see the message in the command prompt window that says “The system cannot find the file specified” so that we can make sure the folder is in fact renamed. If you get “Access is denied” message go to step 2 and read notes under “Updated – 15 August 2016″

Step 4 Windows PowerShell launch for edge browser reset

Now, Microsoft Edge has been removed. To bring it back, we need to reinstall it through an Admin ‘PowerShell” prompt.

To Launch PowerShell, Type “Power Shell” in Windows search. Right Click and Run as Administrator  The “Windows PowerShell” – Desktop app

Step 5

The Default Directory listed would be as – PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>

(Please make sure this blog post you are reading is in English before copying the below commands.
Go to the Top Right of this web page and Ensure the Translation drop down is set to English.)

We need to change the directory to reflect the current user account. I am showing it step by step to prevent confusion for the not so Techie guys.

  1. Type –         cd c:\                – Hit enter
  2. Directory Changes to – PS C:\>
  3. Type –       cd users           – Hit enter
  4. Directory changes to – PS C:\users>
  5. Type –      cd thf               – Hit enter
  6. Directory changes to – PS C:\users\thf  (“thf” is the username in this example – Substitute it with your account name)

You can change the directory in one shot, if you wish, with the following command –  cd c:\users\thf   (“thf” is the username in this example – Substitute it with your account name)

(If your username consists of two words, ensure it is enclosed within Double Quotes  ” “. For example: If John Monroe is the user name, then the command would be cd c:\users\“John Monroe”)

Step 6powershell reset edge browser

Then, Copy and Paste this Command in the PowerShell:  Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose}

Hit enter and wait for some time. Once it says operation completed … Type “exit” and Hit Enter.

Step 7

The Edge Browser is back in Windows 10. Restart the computer to complete the Process.

Happy Browsing once again with the Microsoft Edge Browser!

Step 8

If you get any errors like ‘Package could not be registered’, ‘The system cannot find the file specified.’ etc.
Example errors –   “Add-AppxPackage: Cannot find path ‘C:\AppXManifest.xml’ because it does not exist.”Then,

Please Navigate to C:\Windows\SystemApps and Rename the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD
(You may have to take ownership to let Windows allow you to rename the folder)

Next, Open the command prompt in admin mode and run the following command. (It will take some time to execute the command)

sfc /scannow

Hit Enter

Once it says, Verification 100% complete.
(It does not matter if it fixed corrupted files or not as long as it has rebuilt the Edge Folder)

Type Exit to Quit Command Prompt Window.

It would’ve rebuilt a fresh copy of the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder with all the required files.

Try to open the Edge Browser. it should work 50% of the time.

If not working, Then Launch PowerShell in Admin Mode and run the below cmdlet command:

(If you performed Step 2 or Step 3 in the Blog, then you need to run the below cmdlet command)

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

Now the above cmdlet command would run without any errors.

Try opening the Edge Browser.
The Edge Browser should launch without any issues.

In case you face any issues in resolving the problems, Please post in the comments section, and I will get back ASAP

The Next Major Update of Windows 10 is Due by August 2nd, 2016!

It will be a Global free roll out starting from August 2nd for Windows 10 users.
Might take some time before all devices get the Anniversary update due to the sheer volume of devices to update.

Let’s Hope that the majority of issues will be taken care by this Anniversary Update! Code-named Redstone.

Those who have not upgraded their Windows 7  & Windows 8.1 systems to Windows 10, July 29th, 2016 is the last date to get a free upgrade.

The Windows 10 November (2015) Update has not fixed the recurring issues with Edge, Cortana or Start Menu, etc. In fact, after the Windows 10 November update, running the generic PowerShell cmdlet to fix issues with Windows 10 Apps like Edge, Cortana, Start Menu, screws up 15 other Windows  Apps. Go here to Find the Ultimate solution to fix that Problem.

The specific PowerShell cmdlet as used in this Blog is fine.

Good News for Windows 10 Anniversary Update users!

Running PowerShell cmdlet commands in Windows 10 Anniversary update (version 1607) or the Windows 10 Creator’s Update (version 1703) does not mess up Windows apps.
Microsoft has fixed the issue in these versions.

Please Share this Solution. It will help friends who face problems with Microsoft Edge Browser.

    • Sorry to hear that edge still crashes. However, if you can provide more details of the problem, I can help get a solution

  1. Great FIX! be sure to run powershell as administrator. After running the fix it still wouldn’t open, but an error i got on initializing the PS fix showed me that the windows firewall needed to be enabled to run the command. On restart I had to start the firewall service in services, because I had it on manual. Initially I had it disabled.

Hope this helps others. It *could* be that all I needed to do was start the windows firewall to get it to run. I have run into other apps in Windows 7 that wouldn’t run without WF. I use Comodo firewall instead.

  3. Hi Fernz. Wondering if you can help me. Installed the Windows 10 upgrade a few days. There are 2 accounts on my computer. Everything was running fine, but now Microsoft Edge will not launch in my account but in the other one from my partner. I am signed as Administrator and have opened Powershell. Have change the user to my name Greg and entered the following code:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}.

Can’t go any further as I get a response “Access Denied”.

Any suggestions on how fix this. I would be most appreciative for any advice.

    Best regards,
    Greg

    • Hi Greg

Even if you have signed in as an administrator, You still need to do the following steps to run PowerShell as an administrator, If not you will get the “Access Denied” response.

To Launch PowerShell as an administrator, Type “Power Shell” in Windows search. Right Click and Run as Administrator, The “Windows PowerShell” – Desktop app

Screenshot of powershell – run – as – administrator

      Always here to help.

  4. Thanks for this , my Microsoft edge would start then hang the hard drive at 99% and that’s it. No idea why this happened but it did , last thing i did was reboot pc after Windows update ( flash player ). Tried to do a system restore but it failed and this or something like it was given as the reason ‘ MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe ‘ but the wording was longer.

So i followed your instructions and it worked , so thank you so much for this advice and time / effort you put into this for us users.

The (ActivityId) – b02b6276-3079-0001-9964-2bb07930d101 (It is the Activity ID of the error message. It will provide us information on what is causing it to unable to register the package : Nie można zarejestrować pakietu)

Launch PowerShell as administrator. Copy and paste the below command.

      Get-AppxLog -ActivityID b02b6276-3079-0001-9964-2bb07930d101

      Hit Enter

Based upon the result from the above activity ID command, we can find the reason and the solution.

It seems to be a permission error. Or it could be that some program is running in the background and need to be closed before the PowerShell command is run.
Also, make sure you restart the system and wait for the computer to settle down, before launching any troubleshooting steps.

I believe you are using Polish as the language on your Windows 10 Operating system.
Is it Windows 10 Home or Pro. Was it a clean install of Windows 10 or an Upgrade from Windows 7, 8.1
Is the Edge Browser working fine in another User account.

  8. Hi Jack

We can try Re-registering the Appx packages.
Go to this Microsoft Link to download the ModernAppRegFix.

    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Re-registers-Modern-Appx-2e528428/file/114944/1/ModernAppRegFix.ps1

To run the script: First, save the file as ModernAppRegFix.ps1 to the desktop.

Important : Copy the “ModernAppRegFix.ps1” file to the Windows System32 Folder.

    Launch powerShell in Admin Mode.
Copy and Paste the below Commands

    Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope Process Unrestricted

    Hit Enter

    Type Y

    Hit Enter

    . .ModernAppRegFix.ps1

Hit Enter (There are 2 dots before the ModernAppRegFix.ps1 command. Don’t miss it)

    Type R

    Repair-Appx-Registry -WhatIf

    Hit Enter

If permission errors are found, Then Copy and Paste the below command too.

    Repair-Appx-Registry

    Hit Enter
Wait for it to process the repair.

Hopefully it should fix the registry permission issues.

I am also attaching a screenshot of the powershell command run in my “Test Windows 10” computer.

    • Hi Rishvvi,

If you systematically follow the steps provided, it should not cause any problems.
The message can be ignored, as it is normal for windows to warn you when files are about to be deleted.
The edge files can be safely deleted,
Once the Powershell command is run , it will rebuild the deleted files.

      Always here to help.

  9. Tried this after November update but it didn’t solve the problem; You’re right: there is more screwed up with this update: Search, action center amongst them. No error message, no eventlog (Edge is mentioned but the location for more information seems to be missing in the overveiw of Window event logs (TWinUI), Weidrt: the file does exist and activatig, it is linked to file history…)

Do you have a solution for the errors that were introduces in the November update?

  10. Hi Willem,
I am working on getting a fix for the errors introduced by the November update. Will post it once able to solve it.

Windows 10 is a very good Operating system, and Edge is also an excellent Browser, However, the Windows 10 Modern Apps, Which includes the Edge Browser seems to break easily when there is a conflict with other programs in the Computer.

The specific cmdlet Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose} resolve issues we face with the Edge Browser even after the November Update.

If the steps in this Blog are followed exactly, it should fix the problem. Ensure that the cmdlet is copied from end to end. If you are copying it from notepad, make sure Word Wrap is unchecked.

From your comments, what I infer is that Edge, Cortana and action center are not working. For Cortana search, please check if this is of any help. https://www.techtantri.com/windows-10-start-menu-not-working/

Always run specific cmdlet commands. Do not run generic cmdlet commands post Windows 10 November update.

Another way to clean install Windows 10 Modern Apps like Edge, Cortana, etc:

    Step1
Create a Test user account with Administrator access
    Step2
Sign out of your main user account that has the problem.(Do not switch user – SIGN OUT)
    Step 3
Sign in to the Test account
    Step 4
Navigate to C:\Users\ Your Main User Account \ AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe and Delete the “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” Folder
(You will be able to easily delete the Edge Folder with all its content in one stroke.)
    Step 5
Sign out of the Test account and Sign in to the Main account
    Step 6
Run the Powershell specific cmdlet command:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

It will rebuild the Edge Folder under Your Main User Account \AppData\Local\Packages\ with all its contents
The Edge browser should be Up and running.

If you get any errors when you run the powershell cmdlet command for edge and issues is still not resolved, please capture the error and post it in the comments.

    Meanwhile follow the below steps:

Go to C: > Windows > SystemApps and RENAME the “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” Folder to “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD”
(You need to take ownership of the folder to let windows allow you to rename it)

Then launch COMMAND PROMPT IN ADMIN MODE
    Type
    SFC /SCANNOW
    Hit Enter
Once scan completes most probably, you will see the below message:
    Verification 100% complete.
Windows resource protection has found corrupt files and successfully repaired them….

SFC /SCANNOW has rebuilt a fresh copy of the “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” Folder, under C: > Windows > SystemApps.

Then Run the below command in Powershell as admin.

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

It should fix most of the issues related to corrupt edge files.
Please keep me posted with the result of the above steps.

Let me know if you need further help.

    • To take ownership of a folder to let windows allow you to make changes to it, Please follow the below steps:

Right-Click the respective Folder > Properties > Security > Advanced > Change > In the open window “Enter the object name to select” Type Administrators and click ‘Check Names’ > OK.
Then put a tick on “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects” Click Apply > Click OK in the Pop-Up Box. Click OK & OK to close all windows.

Then, Once again, Right-Click the respective Folder > Properties > Security > Edit > Under “Group or usernames” Select ‘Administrators…’ Put tick marks under “Allow”.Click OK & OK to close the Windows.

  11. Hi
After step 6 powershell says ”performing the operation ….on target…….xml but after that cursor keeps blinking for hours and never comes to the stage of saying operation completed -what do I do ?

    • Hi Chandramouli

Please attach a screenshot of the PowerShell window and send it to me.
      Need to analyze the screenshot.

Meanwhile, Open Command Prompt as administrator.

      Run SFC /SCANNOW

Once scan completes most probably, you will see the below message:
      Verification 100% complete.
If files are corrupt you will get the below message too:
Windows resource protection has found corrupt files and successfully repaired them….

Then Run the below cmdlet in Powershell as admin.

      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

Keep me posted with the result.
      Always here to Help.

  12. Hi Thanks for all the step by step help that enabled me to resolve the problem with Edge and have it working again

    • A Very Big Thank You to Chandramouli for giving me the opportunity to help resolve the problem with The Edge Browser.
His patience in following troubleshooting steps through email was awesome.

And this helps the whole Windows 10 Community. Thanks Once again Chandramouli.

The issue was caused due to a corrupt file in the C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder, which prevented re-installation of the Edge Browser.

I have updated the solution in STEP 3 (18 January 2015) in this Blog Post, so that any issues related to corrupted files in this folder will be taken care.

  13. Hi, I followed the method but get “not recognized” error, see below. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

    C:\Users\aqual>Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}
‘Get-AppXPackage’ is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.

    C:\Users\aqual>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    C:\Users\aqual>Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}
‘Get-AppXPackage’ is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.

I run the command as admin in admin shell

    C:\Users\aqual>

  14. Thank you for your help. Incidentally, when I tried these steps, I kept getting an error saying “Cannot find path C:Windows\SystemsApps… ” because it does not exist. However, I verified that the path did exist. I noticed when I pasted the command into PowerShell, there was a “-” after the AppXManifest tag as in “AppXManifest-.xml”. That might have been because I copied and pasted the string into Word and it may have inserted a hyphen at the word wrap. In any event, after I removed the “-“, everything worked fine. Thank you so much.
    Steve

  15. Well, you are good at writing documentation – the instructions were very clear, and the whole process worked. It did not solve my problem, however, and now several pages refuse to open completely and most links from email never open. Those problem websites and links open right away in Firefox (the pages and links to one of the problem websites used to open right away in Edge). I’m hoping Edge comes out with an update soon and reinstalls itself.

  16. Edge still open then closes immediately. tried running scannow but get he response “windows resource protection could not start the repair service” tried verifyonly and got the same response.

    • Hi Tony

Open services.msc and verify that ‘windows modules installer’ is enabled and is set to manual. You can try starting the service.
Then run sfc /scannow in command prompt Admin Mode.

Alternatively, you can try running sfc /scannow in PowerShell Admin Mode

  17. I have a problem with Microsoft edge in that it won’t print but if I use Google chrome it will print in Word. I bought an Epson printer just recently and installed it. I had Microsoft tech (first level) help me we reinstalled the printer, reset edge put still it show the printer box but says it connect connect to printer. I have checked the printer spool it’s on Automatic. Since I updated to windows 10 from windows 8.1 I have tried 2 different printer to no avail. I’m not sure to reinstall windows with the recovery disc or to reinstall Edge. Any help would sure be appreciated. I’m 70 years old and i’m pretty good at understanding a computer and install software. Thanks soooo Much

  18. After following thru your instructions Microsoft Edge is still not responding
It will open but will disappeared from the screen after a minute

    • Hi Tony

      Please Run the PowerShell command once again after ensuring the edge folder is renamed by following step 3;
      let me know the result.

  19. Worked for me right up until the end…powershell did as promised, but after reboot Edge was not reinstalled.

    • Hi Don

Please follow Step 3 (To Ensure the edge folder is renamed)
Then try to run the PowerShell Command once again.

    • Hi Anurag

On closely analyzing the error message.

It seems that a file required for the installation is missing or corrupt.

Navigate to C:\Windows\SystemApps and Rename the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD
(You may have to take ownership to let Windows allow you to rename the folder)

Then Launch Command prompt (Admin): Right-Click Windows Start and select Command prompt (Admin)

      Type sfc /scannow

      Hit Enter.

Let the scan complete to 100%

      You will see a message:

      Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
      supported in offline servicing scenarios.

(Even if you get a message that it could not repair some files, it’s OK as long as it has rebuilt the Microsoft Edge folder)

Type Exit to Quit the command prompt window.

      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

Now the above command would run without any errors.

      Try opening the Edge Browser.
The Edge Browser should launch without any issues.

      • Hi, I have thsi same issue, I’ve done what It says howerver the same output cotinues:

  21. Im trying to get this to work on both my and my wifes computer but it sawys access is denied even when Im running cmd prompt in admin mode. The problem Im trying to solve is that my edge browsers print screen just comes up with a spiinning wheel of dots and never finds the printer or whatever else its looking for. It wont even let us print to PDF or XPS document because of the same thing. I was hoping a clean install would help, but I cant get this to work either. Any help would be appreciated.

  22. this app can’t open
Microsoft-edge can’t be opened with the built in administrator account try opening with a different account
well I followed the above and even did the scan and still the micro-edge does not work

    • Hi Edmonton

Have you followed all the steps in the Blog? Was step 3 performed? Did you encounter any error messages on the way, while running the commands?
Your Operating System? – Windows 10 Home or Professional, 32 bit or 64 bit. Windows Build : 10586 or 10240?
What happens when you try to launch Edge? Does it open and close immediately or is the symptom different?

  23. Greg wondering if you can help me. Don’t really want to reinstall Edge if I don’t have too. I am having an issue with Edge not staying logged into Facebook and other password required websites. Loading of pages on these sites are very slow and sporadic for a time then once loaded, seem to work okay. Sometimes. Sometimes the page even locks up and then it’s hard to even close Edge. Almost like a script is running in the background. I have spent hours online looking for a solution. I’ve done al the little things under setting and advanced settings. I’ve cleared my browser date numerous times. Turned on/off/on save passwords and form entries. Tried all three options related to cookies. Ran system file check. Ran windows store apps troubleshooter. Nothing works. It is very frustrating. I have no problem spending time to try your method if you think it will work. Or maybe you have another answer.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and putting this info online

    • Hi Kenny

You can try the method listed in my Blog. It wont take much time.

Start by running the below command in PowerShell Admin Mode.

      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

Check if it fixes the problem.

      If doesn’t fix,

      Create a System restore Point.

Then, Perform Step 3 In my Blog.(Renaming of the C:\Users\thf\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD)

      Then Run the Below command:
      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

If that too doesn’t fix , then you can go for the more elaborate method. Starting on a clean slate.

Please Navigate to C:\Windows\SystemApps and Rename the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD

Next, Open command prompt in admin mode and run the following command. (It will take some time to execute the command)

      sfc /scannow

It will rebuild a fresh copy of the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder with all the required files.

Then, once again, Perform Step 3 In my Blog.(Renaming of the C:\Users\thf\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe Folder to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD)

Then, Run the below command once again.
      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

Any issues that is related to corrupted Edge App Files should be taken care by this method.

    • Hi Zack

      Run PowerShell as Administrator.
There are different ways to launch PowerShell in Admin mode.

      1. Right-click the ‘Task bar’ > Select ‘Task Manager’ > ‘File’ > ‘Run new task’ > Type – powershell – in the open window. > Put a Tick on ‘Create this task with administrative privileges’ (You have to click on ‘More details’ at the bottom of the Task Manager to see the expanded view of Task Manager)
      Click OK.

      2. Right-click ‘Start’ Select Command Prompt (Admin) and in the Command Prompt Window Type Powershell
      Hit Enter.
      3. Type Powershell in windows/cortana search, wait for some time and then Right-click on the search result “PowerShell” and select Run as Administrator.

    • Hi Abdullah,

Disabling development mode is to ensure that the system is in normal working mode and secure.
The settings to use developer features can change the level of security of your device.

  25. hello. I have followed your post and everything seems to go exactly as it should. Unfortunately, Edge still does not run. It opens, and then within a second or so it closes, same as before I reinstalled it.

    • Hi Tom

Please do the steps in the below mentioned order: (Read Step 3 and step 8 thoroughly before performing the below steps)

      1. Perform Step 3 in the Blog
      2. Skip all the intermediate steps and proceed straight to Step 8 and follow it systematically.

      Let me know the progress.

  27. Curious if you could help me or not. I have upgraded about 10 workstations in our domain to Windows 10 as a trial before doing all workstations and Cortona does not appear to work. Other browsers however work like a charm. I can’t change from Private to Public like I read others have done because it’s a domain network. It’s odd that all of the workstations have the same issue. Before I follow your steps, wanted to know if you had any ideas why this may be ahead of time. DNS Client is also not an issue as it is Automatically started per the Services config screen.

  28. thanks for this.. my only comment would be regarding step 8

Next, Open command prompt in admin mode and run the following command. (It will take some time to execute the command)

if you are in powershell as admin already, no need for command prompt! 🙂

  29. Hi I have got a cracker of a problem if you can help ?
I have been following your information over the last few days and am getting nowhere ?
    Let me explain :
several months ago I tested a bat file from the internet to remove Edge , it worked however I decided after several months I would like to get it back again but that is proving to be impossible so far !
( my fault I know for running the bat file )

so far tried system recovery reset my PC ( no good )
I have no edge folders in either location ( windows app data packages or windows system apps )
    SFC scan is not rebuilding
finally when run powershell commands as suggested nothing happens just reverts to last prompt after a few seconds
I guess things are probably beyond help and I am probably looking at a full reinstall unless any other routes can be suggested ?
Strangely all other apps are working fine its only Edge that’s the issue its just nowhere on my PC ??
    thanks in advance
    Steve

  30. This is the most comprehensive article I have seen so far on the Edge install. Do you think you could figure out away to install Edge on a version of Windows 10 that does not have it, such as LTSB?

  31. looks like I am going to have to go for the full reinstall of W10 then as it looks like nobody can suggest a solution
never mind very informative article anyway
    regards
    all

  32. Hey I Hope you Reply me soon ’cause I really need you ! It worked at first then the issue come back again like never happend & the app store started not to work also what to do please !

  33. I downloaded Chrome in a few seconds and was up and running right away.

Why would anyone ever go through this torture?

  34. Hello and thank you. Step 3 was exactely what I was looking for as my EDGE had the very common Printer Problem so that the new Printer UI didn´t find any Printer. Now it is solved!

  35. I have the problem that I tried everything: deleting and renaming the folder, power shell command with AllUsers and without (with result it should be ok)..

But the only successful thing was to create a new administrator account (on the command line, as it is even not possible to create a new account by UI, I also can’t install apps from the store, maybe it all relies on Edge, too?), logging into it and there Edge starts without any problems.

Do you have any idea how under these circumstances there is a way to “switch”/copy the working Edge to the main user account with all my documents? Of course, I could move them.. but we want to solve this puzzle, don’t we? 😉 In my case it was an Upgrade from Windows 7 Pro.

  36. (I dont know if my post has been sent, but if so you can delete this copy.
BTW, in event log I see in my case it is Exception code: 0xc0000409)

  37. Ugh. Tried to run the scan both in command and powershell admin.

It looks like it starts then bombs out at 9% with this:

“Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.”

    Am I hosed?

    • Hi Christina,

Step 1. Please run SFC /SCANNOW in Windows safe mode. Also make sure that the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders exist under C:\Windows\WinSxS\Temp. (Assuming C is the root drive where windows is installed)

Step 2. You can also run chkdsk /r in command prompt to check the drive for errors.
(If bad sectors are found while running chkdsk /r and if attempt recovery of bad sectors is checked while checking the drive for errors, the data in the bad sector might be lost while attempting to recover bad sectors)

Step 3. Run this in command prompt admin mode Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
(If it completes successfully, then run sfc /scannow once again and check if it runs without any errors)

Step 4. Run sfc /scannow if step 3 completes successfully.

  38. I upgraded to ms 10 from ms 8.1, Dell desktop. worked really well for awhile then all of a sudden it opened but the only thing on is “import bookmarks” on the startup page and then freezes. I have to do a control, alt, delete to shut if off. haven’t been able to open it since. using chrome right now, but all my PDF files want to open in edge. is there anyway to change what opens PDF files? Or do I need to reinstall edge?

    • Hi Maureen,

Yes, You can change what opens PDF files.

Right-Click a PDF file => Select Open with from the drop-down list. => Click on Choose another app => Then select the app you wish to open PDF files (If adobe acrobat is installed in your system, it will be listed)
Put a tick mark next to “Always use this app to open .pdf files”
      Click OK.

The next time you click to open a PDF file, it will always open in the app you chose.

Let me know if you need further help.

  39. Hello Fernz: After upgrading a Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium machine to Windows 10, the Edge Browser stopped working. Trying to get to any website shows “Hmm. we can’t reach this page”. The machine has the Chrome browser on it as well and Chrome has no problems resolving and accessing web addresses. After doing a Google search on the problem it seems to be a common issue for Windows 10 and there seems to be no clear solution, not even from Microsoft as far as I could tell. After seeing your post on reinstalling the Edge browser I decided to try it. It worked and displayed the startup to tour the features such as Cortana, etc. I didn’t want that so I went into the browser settings to change the default start up page, Edge reverted back to the original problem. Really bizarre. Any suggestions on how this persistent and pervasive problem can be solved once and for all? Suggestions appreciated !

  40. I followed all the steps in your post and when I got to the Powershell (admin) step it said I was denied access when I followed your suggestion and pasted the following:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

    • Hi Murdoch,

Ensure that you run the command in PowerShell Admin Mode by following any one of the below methods:

Type Power Shell in Windows search. Right Click and Run as Administrator The “Windows PowerShell” – Desktop app

Right-click the ‘Task bar’ => Select ‘Task Manager’ => ‘File’ => ‘Run new task’ => Type – powershell – in the open window. => Put a Tick on ‘Create this task with administrative privileges’
Click OK.(You have to click on ‘More details’ at the bottom of the Task Manager to see the expanded view of Task Manager)

Right-click ‘Start’ Select Command Prompt (Admin) and in the Command Prompt Window Type Powershell Hit Enter

  41. Hi Fernz,
I have Win10 on two other machines that operate Edge perfectly, but this machine gives the “Hmm. we can’t reach this page” message when I try to use Edge as the browser. IE and Firefox both run flawlessly. None of the solutions above for reinstall/repairing Edge have worked for me.
I would ignore this issue EXCEPT I now realize that Microsoft update has NEVER ran on this machine. (Windows Defender virus/spyware definitions do update automatically).

Manually launching the update service gives the message “We couldn’t connect to the update service” everytime. Also, the option of running update IE 11 Tools returns a pop-up “Windows cannot find ‘wuapp.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again”

Fearing a vulnerability, I was able to manually install the cumulative Update for Windows (KB3172988). Since I won’t automatically receive “The latest Windows 10 update: Anniversary update” should I try to manually install it too? Or, do you have a better idea 🙂

    • Hi Nhoji,

It is better and much easier to manually install the Anniversary update. It will also fix all the problems you currently face in your computer.

Download the ISO file to your Windows 10 computer.
Simply Double Click the ISO file and Windows 10 will automatically mount the ISO file to a virtual BD-ROM Drive.

Then go to “This PC” Double Click the Virtual BD-ROM Drive to view the files. Click on setup.exe to launch the Update and follow the instructions.
All your data will be safe if Keep personal files and apps is ticked in the ‘Ready to install’ Screen

The update might take anywhere from an hour to 2 or even 3 hours depending on the data you have in your root drive.

If you have Windows 10 Pro 64 bit English operating system installed in your system, then, If required I can provide you the link to download the Windows 10 Pro Anniversary update ISO file. (Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit English – Version 1607 – Build 14393) I received it through windows update to insiders edition of Windows. I then converted the .ESD file to .ISO and used it to update my other Windows 10 systems.

Let me know if you need it.

  42. Seemed to have been hi-jacked by saservice.co.uk saying the computer was correct on Edge. Tried a couple of re-installs and this one solved the problem. Thanks very much my friend much appreciated.

  43. This does not work for me. The Powershell command says it is completed, but the folder is never created in C:\Users\geraldh\AppData\Local\Packages.

  44. Having read this I believed it was very informative. I appreciate you taking the time and effort
to put this content together. I once again find
myself spending a lot of time both reading and leaving comments.

  45. I did this a couple of months ago, successfully, and my Edge browser worked fine until yesterday. I retried the method today, and all I get is :

  47. Hi!
Followed all steps, ‘scannow’ no issues. Edge not rebuilt. Ran cmdlet command: in powershell (admin). Error:
    Add_AppxPackage:cannot find path
‘C:\AppxManifest.xml’ because it does not exist…
Object not found, Path not found.
Some time back I ran an app that disabled edge because it behaved erratically. Any further steps to take – or just stick with alternative browsers?
    Thanks

    • Hi Ross,

Edge is an integral part of Windows 10. It is very difficult to get rid of it completely without any trace from the system. Bringing it back is also very difficult if you used an app to remove Edge.
Guess the app you used to remove Edge is an exe file downloaded from Winaero. It removes related entries from Registry as well as from the WinSxS folder.

Just Check if the Edge folder is present in C:\Windows\SystemApps. If it is present, we might be able to bring it back by renaming the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD and then running sfc /scannow It will rebuild Edge.

However, if the app you ran is the exe file from Winaero, sfc /scannow will not be able to rebuild the Edge folder in C:\Windows\SystemApps as sfc /scannow depends on the C:\Windows\WinSxS folder and some related registry entries to rebuild the missing files. Even running DISM commands to fix the WinSxs folder will not help.
Since you have already run sfc /scannow without returning any errors, the Edge folder might not be there in C:\Windows\SystemApps

There are other ways to try to get it back, but it is not worth the time and effort and it may result in other issues too.
As you mentioned, stick with alternate browsers.

The next sure shot method is an in-place upgrade of Windows 10.
I believe the Windows 10 version / build in your system is 10.0.10586.545
Upgrade to the Windows 10 Anniversary edition and Edge would be back 100%.

I can provide you the steps and guide you through email.

  48. this fix did not work for me. I followed all the instructions. Something else is wrong. I have 2 separate account setup. The Admin account works fine with Edge. The Child account does not work with Edged.

  50. DUDE!! THANK YOU!! Im a total tech idiot, and this worked for me. I appreciate it very much, I did get my edge to finally open up, it just didnt work at all…. i always screw things up and then cant fix them…

  51. Thank you! You have resolved my problem with Edge. I have spent almost a year trying to get Edge to work without any success. Now clicking on Edge actually allows the program to open and stay open.

  52. My problem was that I no longer saw My NewsFeed and Top sites & suggested content, even with selecting these in the Edge Settings – all I saw was an empty page with a URL box. I followed your instructions, and everything appeared to execute properly, I see an renamed folder xxx.OLD and a new one. Powershell steps did not produce any obvious errors.
Good news is that Edge does launch (note I tend to use the Classic Windows interface for Windows 10) but it looks the same as before. Just a blank sheet whether it is a Start Page or New Page.
Any idea how to get the news feed back? Could this be due to an issue with Edge collecting or pushing the news feed? Of course I could just provide a news site URL to serve as a home page?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or assistance.

  53. I am not able to open my windows app folder thus not able to delete or rename MS edge folder and finally not able to restore it please helppp me mail meeeeeee my email is [email protected]

    Merci d’avance

  55. Thank you very much for this very useful hint. The adblock extension in Edge was broken, but the powershell command you proposed solved the problem.

  56. Fernz,
Very nicely done. I have question I am deploying Win 10 LTSB to part of my domain. We liked to run out to the whole domain. My question is have you or anyone installed Edge Browser on windows 10 LTSB?
    Shawn

  57. Hi Frenz: I’ve been trying to do all the steps mentioned in this blog and nothing happens. First of all, my PC doesn’t have the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe on this C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\ directory, though it does appear on the SystemApps dir.

When I paste the command Get…etc. on Powershell, nothing happens. Any clue of what can I do?

    Thanks in advance

  58. I absolutely detest things that don’t work properly. The start button doesn’t work, the toolbar doesn’t work properly and this include the calendar and edge doesn’t work. 8, 8.1, 10; what’s the difference really. 50 shades of crap!

  59. Hey there,
MS Edge will at best show a blue screen for a second and then disappear. I have tried all fixes I can find but nothing will get it to run. Running the following in PowerShell:
    Get-Appxlog | Out-GridView
    gets me:
Date & Time 818 Determining packages to be installed during logon for user: S-1-5-21-…-1001
Date & Time 819 The following packages will be installed:. The following packages will be removed:

    Any help would be great

  61. Hello, I have tried to re-install edge using the information you have provided and have not been successful. I end up in Powershell at the location specified but after entering in the script, I just receive the cursor once again. There is no errors or activity, just the return to the prompt. I did use a script to de-install edge, so I am not sure if that created additional complications. I am copying and pasting the script and not entering it by hand. Thank you, Larry

    • Hi Larry,

Do you remember the script used to uninstall edge? (Refer the comment by Ross Algie dated August 21, 2016 at 4:20 am)

Check if the Edge folder is present in C:\Windows\SystemApps. If it is present, we might be able to bring the Edge back by renaming the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.OLD and then running sfc /scannow It will rebuild Edge.

If the script used to uninstall edge is something similar to the app from Winaero, sfc /scannow will not be able to rebuild the Edge folder in C:\Windows\SystemApps as sfc /scannow depends on the C:\Windows\WinSxS folder and some related registry entries to rebuild the missing files. Even running DISM commands to fix the WinSxs folder will not help.

  62. Well, I’m insider an try version 15043 the browser didn’t work after upgrade, I decide to wait to next update 15046 who arrived 2 weeks later aprox. But still cannot use Edge. What I remember is to installed Symantec Endpoint 14 in 15043 or prior, before update to 15046 I installed version 14 MP1. The problem was Edge Open without previous tabs only 1 & empty. I can access settings but after 10 seconds closes unexpectedly not saving any change in settings. I tried everything on this page nothing worked still giving me errors: 10010 “register Dcom within required timeout” in System, 1000 “Application Error”. Sfc /scannow reports nothing wrong every time, I did erase full folder “C:\Users\reynaldor\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe” every time no problem, Sfc /scannow run smotthly every time no errors, Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose} run fine without errors. I rename Edge folde under Packges still not working. I rename the folder under C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe to C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbweOLD. Edge icon dissapeared from taskbar, run again Sfc /scannow delay more this time reporting repairs. Edge icon back again in a new folder. Still not working. The I noticed, when I run Defender reports me disabled & behaved in the same manner as Edge. Closing after a 5-10 seconds. The I tried to uninstall Endpoind 14 Mp1 & restart. Who FIX the situation. Opening fine now. I’m going to try again installing the Endpoint to see If I can repeat the problem.

  63. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You !!! It worked for me following your instructions I downloaded. I was about ready to give up and just use another browser. I came across your info today, Very happy about getting it reinstalled and so far working great. The settings were lost with favorites, etc., but it was easy to import them and not a big deal for me. My experience with your help is greatly appreciated !!

  64. Hi, I just recently had this problem occur to me.
I tried this method, the sfc scan, all the troubleshooting stuff, and more, even deleting some other files. But whenever I do this stuff, no errors come out, while the problem still occurs. Also, I had problems with the store as well, but it is not the store’s fault, so I think it is related to this issue. Pls help!

  65. Hi Frenz: I upgraded from windows7 to windows 10 long back and now i have windows 10 pro, version-1607 with OS Build 14393-953. I am able to download apps, have mail ms account working and registered as Admin Account holder. Unfortunately Edge browser has never worked. It closes as soon as it is launched. I tried many ways available at various forum, no luck. I was glad to find your this page. I followed step 1 to step 3. I was able to completely delete Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder without any problem. Hence I did not follow step4 of renaming. Next completed step 5 to step 7 without any error. Restarted the PC but Edge wont open (sic)! I also ran sfc scan which was clean. But no luck with Edge. Will appreciate further suggestions. Of-course my Google browser is working fine. Thanks.

  66. Hi I put in the command and I got this error, everything had worked up to this point:

  67. Hi Fernz,

After updated to Windows 10 Creator, the Edge keeps flashing and disappeared when I launch it. I followed your post and did all the steps and could not fix the problem, I even coped the Edge director from other computer (I have two exact the same, one works fine with Creator update) and still could not fix the problem (keep flashing and disappeared when launch it). If I did launch Edge couple times, then the Edge can stay opened but does nothing, it only shows “go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=525773”, and “setting” has no response,… What can I do? Please help. Thanks.
    Kelvin

  68. I just quit Edge !!
Got on Microsoft Support and after 3 full days with 8 different people they were unable to fix the problem of Edge not loading and then just going off after a few seconds. I would not even be able to relate all they tried. Done with it !! I still got IE and Chrome and I will be happy with them. Twice with two different people when they couldn’t fix it they would just bail an go off line with me, leaving me there waiting and waiting. I guess that’s how they handle it not to be stupid at their job.

  69. Tried everything in this list and still my Edge browser comes up blank and then crashes after a few seconds. Even on a brand new user account. I’ve even switched to the insider’s fast ring build which is basically like a reinstall and it’s STILL doing it! Very bizarre indeed. The logs mention a fault in emodel.dll

  70. I have tried everything you suggest and I still cannot open Edge, I get the headers and some access to the setting etc. but nothing more. After every attempt to correct the problem I get a “Edge has crashed warning” from PC Scan and repair.

  71. I have tried all of the solutions with the Creators Update on a brand new Surface Pro. Everything completes with no errors, but Edge is still crashing. I spent hours (painful) with MS tech support with no resolution. I can create a brand new account, and the problem is there too. A complete wipe solved the issue for a couple of hours, but it came back. I have uninstalled all of the extensions (I had installed LastPass, Ghostery, YouTube Enhancer and a JSON formatter)

  72. I have tried everything mentioned here – even tried going to a previous Restore Point when I knew the Edge worked – but that has not helped – this is on Surface Pro 2 (not that it should matter). Ran SysInternals ProcessMon and seems like there is registry entry that it is trying to get that doesn’t exist. No idea how to re-create these or if that is the real problem.
